Early October ’08: Topics-of-Study

These weeks will introduce the following topics, but also review all other Essential Trimester One Standards. Please see the other “Topics of Study” posts and the CA Essential Standards page in order to check your skills for Trimester One Testing (October 27th-October 31st).

Language Arts: Cause and Effect, Capitalization + Review of Finding Information in Books

• Cause and Effect (notes), Cause/Effect, Cause/Effect #2 (review practice)
• Capitalization Rules (notes), Capitalization, Capitalization #2 (review practice)
• Parts of a Book (notes), Parts of a Book (review practice), Using a Dictionary (review practice and notes)

Mathematics: Estimating, Equals (addition and multiplication)

• Rounding and Estimating (notes and review practice), Rounding and Estimating Decimals (notes), Rounders Rounding (game)
• Equals notes will appear shortly. In the meantime, here are a few examples: If 3 + 4 + 7 = 3 + n + 7, then n=4. lf 22 x 3 = m x 11 x 3, then m=2.

Social Studies: Chapter One – California’s Geography

• Study Guideline Notes — Chapter One, Textbook Enrichment
• CA’s Location/Regions of CA, Climate, Vegetation, etc., Life in CA (all vocabulary practice)
• California Geography, The Four Regions of California (all notes)

Science: Chapter One — Living Things Need Energy (food chains & webs)
