Our science studies begin this year with the study of life science. So far, we’re in the process of finishing our discussions about photosynthesis. On Thursday, we’ll head to CSU, Chico for a Hands-On Science Lab! For a great animated summary of our studies so far, click below!
Have you met Riley yet? Riley is a stuffed ram that will be visiting each of our homes as part of a California regions project we’ve embarked upon. As California has four main geographical regions, Riley will visit one classroom in each of the four areas of the state: Central Valley (us!), Desert, Pacific Coast, and Mountain. When he comes home with your child, it is important that he stay safe (away from pets and other generally messy things!) and is brought back the next morning. Your child will be responsible for a one to two page journal entry from Riley’s point of view that explains his adventures that evening. Please help your child keep Riley in great condition, as he will still travel to another ~100 students after he leaves us! If you’re a tech-savvy parent, please e-mail me photos of Riley’s time spent with you so that we may add them to Riley’s website at http://rileytheram.msyorksclass.com.
Here’s the synopsis: “Riley the Ram resides in the beautiful town of Gridley, California. It is part of the Central Valley region, one of four main geographical areas in California. A resident of Woodrow Wilson Elementary School (go Wilson Rams!), Riley the Ram has decided to embark on a journey around this great state! He wants to see what he’s been missing, and share what he’s found. If he comes to your school, he’s sure you’d be happy to show him around!”

Please remember to attend Thursday’s Back to School Night on September 15th! Second and third grade teachers will present from 6:30 to 7:00 PM. Fourth and fifth grade teachers will be speaking from 7:15-7:45 PM. Teachers will share information about important procedures, curriculum, as well as any other pertinent information to the classroom.
Also, Thursday is Picture Day! Be sure to dress sharply!
Due to Picture Day scheduling, our library time has changed. Our classroom’s library slot traditionally takes place on Thursday mornings. However, this upcoming week, our time has changed. We will attend our library time on Monday instead. If your child has his/her library book at home, please give a reminder to place the book in the appropriate backpack on Sunday night. Thank you!
Thanks for staying up to date with Room 36! Please use the following videos, notes, and review exercises for regular at-home practice. By mid to late September, students should be able to understand and internalize the majority of the following information. If you can’t find the login information for BrainPopJr (the site with all the “video” tags below), please send me a quick e-mail or note, and I can give you the details. The videos are well worth watching!
Language Arts: Sentence Types, Complete Sentences, Expanding Sentences, Finding Information in Books
Mathematics: Place Value, Standard/Written/Expanded Forms of Numbers, Multiplication Facts
Social Studies: General Global Geography; Begin Chapter One — California’s Geography
Just a reminder that Reading Logs and Handwriting Packets are due every Friday morning. Reading Logs must be signed on Thursday night with a total of 100 minutes per week (Mon-Thurs). Your child’s Reading Log will be checked daily. Please note any corrections made and encourage your child not to repeat the same mistakes. Perfect practice makes perfect! Although Accelerated Reader books are not absolutely required for the Reading Log, please read AR books until you are caught up with your trimester reading goal (30.0 points). Also, handwriting packets may be returned sooner if they are finished. Be sure to fill in every line completely!
Both reading logs and handwriting packets will be consistent weekly homework until the end of the year. Thanks for keeping your work turned in on time!
Thank you so much for returning the Parents Are Partners surveys! Most parents have already returned their sheets and I’m receiving some very valuable information! It’s a great resource to make sure we’re all on the same page. If you ever have any new information or a scenario you’d like to keep me informed with, please don’t hesitate to use the contact form. Have a great Labor Day holiday!
