A Maths Dictionary for Kids...

Yes, you read it right: m-a-t-h-s. The following site was made by an Australian school teacher, therefore the term “maths” as opposed to “math” is used. Really, “mathematics” is plural, so “maths” is probably the better term. I digress.

A Maths Dictionary for Kids is a wonderful site full of colorful and easily explained math definitions. For many of our trimester two standards (area and perimeter, radius and diameter, parallel/perpendicular/intersecting lines, etc.), these definitions are a great reference source. On several of the definition pages, there are also small interactive practices! It’s been listed on the Homework Help page for a while, but if you haven’t checked it out yet, head over there!

BrainPop Jr....

Lucky Room 36! Thanks to last year’s Math*A*Thon funds and parent donations, our class has a subscription to BrainPopJr! This is a fantastic service that shows short cartoon movies covering a variety of content ranging from Writing a Paragraph and Camouflage to Rounding and Food Chains! These movies can be viewed by using the username and password sent home to you. It is also found in our Back to School Night Packet. If you have forgotten the username/password, send a quick note or e-mail and I will resend it to you. Many of the videos are linked under specific content areas on our Games page, but feel free to browse the entire site as well!

SpellingCity.com: AMAZING Resource!...

SpellingCity is an unbelievable website that offers vocabulary practice in all forms: written and oral practice, definition review, sample tests, and *tons* of helpful games! Practice your whole list, or simply type in the missed words from your pretest. I’ve already taken time to enter our whole year‘s worth of spelling words! MeeGenius...

When I was a child, my mother ordered two personalized books as Christmas gifts for my brother and I. I no longer know where mine is, but I’ve kept my brother’s safe for quite some time. It was a wonderful Christmas tale that incorporated the names of our pets, my brother’s friend, and the two of us. I still think it was an amazing gift.

Today, while prepping for the new school year, I stumbled across MeeGenius. This is a new beta site that, in mere minutes, replicates the gift my mother gave us. Choose a free book from their list, add in your own names and a few choice details, and you’ve got a personalized book in seconds. I had to make one myself, just for fun! What a great way to engage your reluctant reader!

The World of Brian P. Cleary...

Brian P. Cleary is the author of a series of bestselling, very clever, rhyming grammar books. We were lucky enough to have a collection of his books donated from gracious DonorsChoose donors two years ago.

The World of Brian P. Cleary is the author’s quirky, kid-friendly website. There’s so much to see that it’s hard to direct you to any particular section of the site. You can test your knowledge on the parts of speech, write a “Crazy Cat Tale” (think Mad Libs), play the train game, read the words and poems of the week, review addition and subtraction, practice your measurements of length, and much more! Poke around for 30 seconds and you’ll find a place you like! Check it out!

OLogy...

The American Museum of Natural History is host to a wonderful website called OLogy! Kids, “ology” is a suffix meaning … what? … “the study of”! Remember that one. OLogy breaks down science into a number of categories, including: Archeology, Astronomy, Biodiversity, Earth, Einstein, Genetics, Marine Biology, Paleontology, and Water. Our current scientific study is that of rocks and minerals, making the “If Rocks Could Talk” interview right up our alley! Take some time over Winter Break and indulge your inner scientist!

Free Rice...

I originally posted about this website back in 2008, but I’m far more impressed now! In the past, FreeRice has been a site where students could play a vocabulary game and earn grains of rice for each correct answer. The grains of rice were then distributed to hungry people all over the world through the UN World Food Program.

In 2010, after revisiting the site, I see that FreeRice is an incredible place for students to practice facts for a wide range of subject areas while still earning rice to donate! Students can answer questions about art, chemistry, English grammar, geography, language learning, math, and of course…vocabulary! Students can also now click on a speaker next to a word to hear it read to them and can change the level of difficulty manually! Better than ever!
